Just outside London sits a castle that has been home to English and British monarchs for nearly a thousand years. Windsor is often described as the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world — and, unlike many great fortresses, it remains a living royal residence to this day.

A thousand years of history

Windsor Castle was begun by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century, chosen for its commanding position above the Thames. Successive monarchs expanded and embellished it over the centuries, turning a Norman fortress into a vast and magnificent royal palace. To walk its grounds is to move through nearly the entire span of English royal history.

The State Apartments

The lavish State Apartments are the highlight for most visitors — grand rooms hung with works from the Royal Collection, including paintings by some of the greatest names in art. They are still used for ceremonial occasions and state visits, which gives them a sense of being very much alive rather than preserved behind glass.

St George’s Chapel

The exquisite St George’s Chapel, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is the spiritual heart of the castle and the home of the Order of the Garter. It has been the setting for royal weddings and is the resting place of many monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II.

Planning your visit

Aim to catch the Changing of the Guard, and allow a good half-day to do the castle justice. As a working royal residence, parts may close at short notice for official events, and opening times vary by season.

Opening times, ticket prices and closures change — always check the Royal Collection Trust website before you visit.
